This tour explores the essentials of Catalonia: “Mar i Muntanya” (sea & mountain) From the foothills of the Pyrenees it runs along the Via Verde through northern Spain’s volcanic countryside and ancient walled villages to the port town of Sant Feliu de Guixols on the Mediterranean coast. We stroll through the medieval back streets in Girona and the Ramblas in Barcelona.
Join tour in Barcelona. This city has truly something for everybody. From the winding alleys of the medieval Barrio Gótico to the contemporary architecture of the MACBA; we will start with an orientation walk through the old town. For dinner, why not sample some of the local specialities?
We take the train to Ripoll, “La Cuna” (the cradle) of Catalonia, home to a famous Romanesque monastery. After a stroll through town, we set off by bikes on the Via Verde, a transformed railway line. After crossing a mountain pass, we ride downhill into Olot, the capital of the volcanic area of La Garrotxa.
Today’s circular route explores the volcanic Garrotxa Natural Park. We cycle on forest tracks through the Fajeda de n’Jorda, a large beech wood forest, have lunch in the mediaeval town of Sant Pau, and stop at the Croscat volcano, which displays a special geological feature.
We head south, following the Via Verde. Apart from one little ascent it is all gentle downhill directly into the heart of Girona. We pass through fertile valleys, surrounded by the dramatic rocks of the Collsacabra Mountains. Later we stroll through the charming town of Girona.
This morning we climb Girona’s ancient city walls and then explore the back-streets on foot. After lunch we head off by bike towards the coast, where the vegetation is increasingly dominated by pine and cork oak trees. A final descent brings us into Sant Feliu de Guixols.
Today you can take it easy: just relax on the beach, or visit the old monastery and the historical centre of Sant Feliu, walk the coastal footpath or cycle to Tossa de Mar. This is a very rewarding but challenging ride along the rocky cliffs of the coastal road, with splendid views across the sea.
Transfer to Barcelona. Before checking into our hotel, we can visit Antoni Gaudi’s fascinating Park Guell. The afternoon is free. You might want to visit other examples of Gaudi’s work, explore more of the old town, or ascend to the Montjuic to enjoy great views over town?
The Tour ends in Barcelona.
