The tour starts after breakfast in your Porto hotel. A guided city tour on foot gives first insights into the history of Porto and its people. Before lunch, we will visit one of the most prestigious Port Wine cellars south of the river and try their products. The afternoon is left free for your own exploration.
We drive to Guimaraes, a UNESCO world heritage site and lovely, historic town right in the heart of the Vinho Verde region. After a visit to one of the local wine producers and after a nice lunch it’s on to Braga and its remarkable hillside church Bom Jesus de Monte. Later we drive back to Porto.
We take the bus and drive to Vila Real, home to Casa Mateus, one of Portugal’s finest Baroque palaces. After a visit, we continue to the Douro and get a first impression of the excellent wines produced here on the slopes of the river. After lunch, we continue to Pinhao, our night stop for the next two nights. We enjoy a river cruise from here on a Rabelo boat, the traditional wooden vessels used in the past.
We dedicate the day to indulging in more good wines in the area around Pinhao. A lunch stop in one of Portugal’s top restaurants makes for a truly memorable culinary experience.
We continue our journey by bus with a first stop in the lovely small town of Lamego, famous for a few fine Baroque buildings. Later we reach Coimbra, the old university town. A guided visit to its world-famous library will allow us for digging deeper into the intellectual legacy of the place before we sit down for a nice lunch. Our night stop today is Marvao, a medieval hilltop village nestling on top of a rock and affording superb views into the surroundings.
We head further south and into the heart of the Alentejo. One of the famous regional winemakers will receive us before we have time for a stroll along the cobblestone streets of Evora. After lunch, we include a stop at a renowned wine estate near Setubal and will finally reach Lisbon.
A guided morning visit on foot introduces the heart of the old town to us before there is time for your own explorations in the afternoon. A fabulous farewell dinner rounds this week up.
The tour ends after breakfast in our Lisbon hotel.
