High Atlas – Walking

We start our trip in Marrakesh, one of the most fascinating cities in Morocco. After a day enjoying the turbulent life of the city, we will enter the mountainous area of the High Atlas. The combination of trekking and scenic drives in 4×4’s allows us to experience the rich culture and fascinating landscapes off the beaten track.

Day 1
Salam aleikum Morocco Welcome to the orient

Flight to Marrakesh and check in to our Riad Sara in the heart of the Medina.  

Day 2
Marrakesh

In the morning we visit the fascinating Medina of Marrakech and its Souks. In the afternoon you are free to stroll around through the bazaars and the heart of the town, the square Jemaa el-Fna. 

Day 3
Into the High Atlas (5h walking)

In the early morning we drive to the High Atlas foothills and start our walk at 1.700m altitude in the small village Aroumd. From here it’s a steady, gentle climb until reaching the mountain refuge (3200m), our overnight stop and base for the ascent to Jebel Toubkal. 

Day 4
Climb Jebel Toubkal (7h walking)

Our ascent to Jebel Toubkal peak (4160 m) starts at the crack of dawn. The climb of 1000m gain in altitude gets rewarded with fantastic views down to the plains of Marrakesh and across neighbouring peaks and valleys. After the conquest of the highest peak of North Africa, we walk down to Aroumd again where our 4×4’s await to drive us to a typical berber village and home stay with a local family.  

Day 5
Trekking to Tizi’nTishka (5h walking)

Another scenic drive through striking mountain scenery is awaiting us. We then start the 16km hike on shepherd’s paths which will get us to the Tizi’n Tishka mountain pass. Afterwards we will drive to Kasbah Telouet, where we spend the night in a hostel. 

Day 6
Trekking in the southern slopes of High Atlas (5h walking)

After a morning visit of Kasbah Telouet we drive towards Ait Benhaddou through valleys, oases, villages made of adobe and old kasbahs. Today’s 15km hike connects the villages of Doura Anguelz Ounila, Taifens and Assaflou”. Overnight-stay in Ait Benhaddou (Unesco World Heritage site).  

Day 7
Ouarzazate – Marrakech

In Ouarzazate we visit the Kasbah Taouirt of el Glaui and the Atlas film studios where films  such as Lawrence of  Arabia, Gladiator or the Mummy have been shot. Later we return to Marrakesh, where you will have the afternoon at your disposal. 

Day 8
Bslamah! Return to Occident

Transport to airport and return flight.
