This trip features cultural visits to Porto, Braga and Lamego – three of the finest historic towns in the north – with great walks in the vineyards of the Douro valley and in the Montesinho National Park in the Serra de Geres. Of course there are opportunities to indulge in the great wines produced in the area, Vinho Verde and Port being the best known ones.
Arrive in Porto and transfer to hotel in town centre.
In the morning we go on an orientation walk for an introduction to the beauty of the historic centre of Porto and possibly take a tram ride to Boa Vista. Later take the train to Regua, driving through the beautiful Douro valley.
We walk up through vineyards until reaching the pretty and once wealthy baroque town of Lamego with its impressive church Nossa Senhora do Remedios. Later transfer back to Regua and time to check out the town and perhaps the wine museum.
We drive to Vila Real and visit Portugal’s finest Baroque building – the Mateus Palace. After, continue driving north to Geres for an afternoon walk up to Fraga Negra. We stay 3 nights in Geres.
We spend all day in this spectacular National Park, walking to Pedra Bela, the “pretty” rock. En route we are afforded great views as we travel through a very diverse landscape.
Today we drive a short distance to Cruzeiro and start our walk along an ancient and – in parts – still cobbled Roman road. There are options for a swim in the nearby lake before heading back to Geres.
We drive to Braga and take time to see the famous Bom Jesus church before continuing back to Porto where the afternoon is free for you to explore , e.g. a visit to one of the famous Port wine producers or a boat trip on the river.
Transfer to airport and fly home.
Season: mid May to mid July and Sept/October
