Lanzarote & Fuerteventura – Cycling

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the best of the Canary islands when it comes to gentle cycling. Both islands are rather flat or undulating, feature unique Volcanic and desert like landscapes with plenty of agriculture squeezed into the lava fields. The sites created by Cesar Manrique, the Lanzarote’s most prolific artist, are spectacularly set and all is surrounded by the great and blue Atlantic Ocean and some fine, white beaches.

Day 1
Buenos dias Lanzarote!

Arrive to Arrecife airport, transfer to hotel in Costa Teguise.

Day 2
Valley of the 1000 Palms, 40km cycling

We drive to Hermita de las Nieves and cycle to the lovely village Haria in  the Valley of the 1000 palms. Later, we continue to Cesar Manrique’s Jameos de Agua and Cactus Garden – two of the most stunning sites created by the artist.

Day 3
La Graciosa, 16km cycling

A bus transfer brings us to Orzola fishing village where we take the ferry to untouched and charming La Graciosa island for a shorter bike tour here. Depending on currents we might have a chance for a swim from one of the most beautiful beaches in  the region.

Day 4
Timanfaya and La Geria, 40km cycling

We drive by bus to our next hotel in the centre of the island, drop off luggage and then cycle into Timanfaya National park with its lunar landscape dating from lava eruptions in the 18th century. Later we pass through the pretty villages of Yaiza and La Geria where unique vineyards built into lava ashes are producing grapes known for making some excellent sweet  wines.

Day 5
Free day

Today is left free for e.g. exploring Caldera Blanca on foot, one of the most spectacular craters of the island. Alternatively spend time at the wonderful Famara beach.

Day 6
To Fuerteventura, 30km cycling

In the early morning we drive to Playa Blanca to catch the ferry to Fuerteventura. Another transfer takes us to Tindaya village, next to the magic mountain of the indigenous Guanches. We cycle from here to La Oliva and finally to the old fishing village El Cotillo. Some beautiful beaches may tempt you  to go for a dip in  the Ocean before dinner.

Day 7
Betancuria and the west coast, 20km cycling

We drive to Betancuria, the old capital of the island, cycle through palm tree orchards before we cross beautiful scenery reminiscent of a Moroccan oasis on foot (2h walking, undemanding) and continue on bikes to Ajuy fishing village.

Day 8
¡Adiós Canarias!

Transfer to Fuerteventura airport.
