Walking Western Algarve

Based in the historically important small coastal town of Sagres, this walking holiday explores a remote corner of Portugal. Following beautiful coastal paths to discover impressive cliffs, quiet sandy beaches and remote inland villages, walk the last section of the long distance path ‘Rota Vicentina’ to Cabo Sao Vicente, the lighthouse at the most south-westerly point of Europe, and pass the remarkable rock formations at Ponta de Piedade south of Lagos. Sample the delicious local cuisine and crisp wines en route. The climate is ideal for walking, including early and late in the year.

Day 1
Bem Vindo

Arrive at Faro Airport and transfer to our hotel in Sagres.

Day 2
Carrapateira to Bordeira, 4 ½ h walking

Our First walk will start in Village Carrapateira. Here we will follow a trail along the dramatic and unspoiled west coast of the Atlantic. Later we reach the village Bordeira from where we will drive back to our hotel.

Day 3
Praia Zavial’s sand beaches, 4h walking

Our day starts with a coastal walk to Praia Zavial with nice swimming opportunities along the way. At the end of the walk we will have some time for a coffee before we take the Taxi back.

Day 4
Rota Vicentina to Cabo Sao Vicente, 5h walking

Today we will travel by taxis to Vila do Bispo and on to the local beach, Praia Castelejo. Here we will begin our walk along the ‘Rota Vicentina’ to Cabo Sao Vicente – Europe’s most south-westerly point. From here we drive back to Sagres.

Day 5
Free day

Free day to do go on adventures by yourself or join an optional walk.

Day 6
Village of Aljezur & walk to Arrifana beach, 4h walking

We will start our day with a travel to Aljezur where we will first explore the historic centre of this small town before we start our walk, heading gradually towards the cliffs of the Atlantic Coast near Arrifana. After some time to relax here or having a swim in the ocean we return by taxi to Sagres.

Day 7
Walk from Burgau to Lagos, 5 ½ h walking

Our day starts with a short drive to Burgau where we start our walk along the rugged coastline to the town of Lagos. On our walk we will enjoy stunning views of the photogenic rock formations at Ponta da Piedade. Later there is time to enjoy the atmosphere in the heart of old Lagos. Return to Sagres by public bus.

Day 8
Adeus Portugal!

Transfer to Faro airport.
